In South America there is an ancient custom for which we
are well known in the world, an
enigmatic drink, prepared with the
plant of Yerba Mate.
When the conquerors arrived to this
land, they noticed that the natives
had a particular ritual, joining the
round to drink an infusion, which
they shared.
They liked it so much that they adopt it as their own, and has
transcended in time.
The expression Mate is born from the Quechua word “matí”, which is
pumpkin, and is where mate is prepared. It was taken through a small
cane, with a seed hollowed out at its end, as a filter.
Customs about mate are complex. There are certain
instruments and even specific vocabulary about the
different type of mate, and even a particular way to
serve it.
After Independence, mate became a symbol of the
gauchos, the argentine cowboys that lived in the large
pampas. As the gauchos became a symbol of the national
pride, mate also became a cultural symbol and a national
custom.
Mate is part of our cultural expression and way
of life. It carries with it a very particular
emotional charge, since it is more than a simple
drink, it is a meeting place where each family or
social group has its own rites around this habit,
which are transmitted from generation to
generation.
There are many ways to prepare a delicious
mate, also different uses and customs
depending to the region of the territory.
Some are sweet and other bitter, with herbs,
fruits or seeds, even cold as the “tereré”.
We will take a tour of its history, myths, legends and traditional uses, along with a
demonstration of different ways to prepare it, for those who want to taste.
